MAKE A BIOTOPE VOL.3
Growing Food

MOVIE:18min45sec
UPDATE:2021.03.28

Signs of spring finally arrived on the Oshika Peninsula in March 2021, four months after we began work on digging a biotope pond in November 2020.

During the long winter, the biotope’s water level fluctuated due to spring water and snow.

Onodera says that he wants to finally start growing food in this environment once the weather gets warm.

At the FERMENTO office, eels, stone clams, and freshwater clams have already been raised and now wait their turn to be released into the biotope, while herb seeds were planted in the facility’s surrounding area.

The large amount of soil excavated during the digging was taken to a site where a massive quantity of earth had been washed away by Typhoon No. 19, which struck Miyagi Prefecture in 2019. Here, we plan to cultivate buckwheat after removing the stones in the soil, creating ridges, and installing a net to keep out deer.

“Buckwheat is the only crop suitable for poor soil,” Onodera is convinced.

When I visited a farmer in the district of Monou who was the first person to start growing buckwheat in Miyagi Prefecture, he laughed and said, “Even dogs don’t eat buckwheat harvested in summer.” But he also added, “It’s true, buckwheat is ideal for poor soil. First try sprinkling seeds to see if they sprout.” Buckwheat can be harvested twice a year. And winter buckwheat is said to be delicious.

Work on reinforcing the pond to prevent it from collapsing was also carried out together with volunteers. Chefs, artists, and students gathered and packed a thousand sandbags in a day. Next, the task of covering the slope with a sheet awaits.

While working hard at FERMENTO every day, Onodera shares his vision of growing and producing as much as possible what he eats at this proving ground that is open to visitors. This is a place replete in endeavors by trial and error to demonstrate a way to live.
