Otomo Yoshihide

Central Ishinomaki

Guitarist, turntablist, and a prolific composer of music for movies and TV programs. Being primarily at home in noise and improvised music, he is active in Japan and abroad, including parts of Asia, Europe, and the US. He has been involved in numerous exhibitions of works fusing art and music, and in the production of projects that involve public participation. After the Tohoku earthquake, he launched the Project FUKUSHIMA! in the prefecture where he grew up, while also engaging in a variety of other activities to date. In 2013, he won the Best Composer Award at the Japan Record Awards for his score for Amachan. Since 2014, he has been striving to establish a network of musicians from Asian countries as the director of the “Ensembles Asia” project. He was appointed art director for the Sapporo International Art Festival in 2017, and took charge of the musical score for the 2019 NHK Taiga drama series “Idaten.” He also directed the reorganized Waraji Festival, one of the biggest summer festivals in Fukushima.

Facing the street that used to be called Bunka-dori, Senninburo was a popular community space that stood adjacent to where a temporary bathhouse was erected in the aftermath of the earthquake. In 2022, it will be reborn as the new cultural spot Theater Kinematica. An orchestra of home appliances produced in the Showa era comes to this space that carries on the memories of both the old and new city. Operated by people behind the scenes, the orchestra of such home appliances as electric light stands, radios, fans, radio cassette players, pencil sharpeners, and juicer mixers emits various sounds and plays music. Listen and enjoy this nostalgic ensemble.
