Shun Natsui

Momonoura

Born in Tokyo in 1981. Graduated from Department of Electronic Engineering, Salesian Polytechnic. Attracted by waves of rich expression, he started to take photographs of the sea in earnest in 2019 while bathing there. He first showed his works in the group exhibition “FUN-Ten” (Nihonbashi, Tokyo, 2019), followed by his solo exhibition “Nami-Ten” (Bayflow in Kichijoji, Tokyo, 2020), etc. In July 2021, he held his solo exhibition “Waves” (Fuji Film Square in Roppongi) as part of “Photographers’ New Stories,” which is the Fuji Film Photo Salon’s project to support young photographers. On this occasion, he released his first photobook Waves (Writes Publishing). He continues to show beauty and strength of the rich ocean in various approaches.

Shun Natsui is a photographer fascinated by waves and whose work conveys the beauty and strength of the ocean. “Waves embody the breathing and beating of the living sea. The sea has always been beautiful and powerful since ancient times, and the sea of the Oshika Peninsula is still alive. ‘New perspectives create new notions.’ I hope that visitors feel attracted to the life-nurturing, maternal sea of Oshika from new perspectives that they have never imagined. With this in mind, I stay close to the sea and capture its momentary brilliance in my photographs. Experience the beauty and might of the sea, always ‘breathing’ and alive since long ago, at the now-closed Oginohama Elementary School, where we still feel the signs of people’s ‘breath’ on this peninsula.” (Shun Natsui)
