Born in Osaka in 1987. She has been expressing “circulation of life” with her main technique of dyeing and weaving while combining various methods and materials including embroidery, knitting and paints. Circulation of life and multi-layered relations between nature and humans are expressed through her careful selection and treatment of each material and weaving of respective relationship with her own hands. She was commissioned to make a work for Starbucks Headquarters building in 2013 and the work En for Park Hotel Tokyo in 2017. She is recognized highly in many fields with her solid handwork and unwavering worldview. She was awarded the grand prize at ONE ART AWARD in Taiwan in 2019.

With her interest in the formation of the world around her, Mariko Kobayashi has continued to produce works thematically exploring the cycle of life. Carefully selecting each material and combining various textile techniques, such as weaving, dyeing, knitting, and stitching all by hand, she laces images together. When she visited the Oshika Peninsula, Kobayashi says that she felt fearful of the ria coast topography and wild-looking plants, while also sensing the richness and blessings that their vigor brings. The artist here tackles the task of exhibiting a large-scale work outdoors for the first time, dynamically depicting the ecological cycle, such as the circulation of water flowing from the forest to the sea as well as the activities of flora and fauna that take place in the sea and forest. On the long stairs leading to Hayamahime Shrine are exhibited animals that jumped out from the work at the path.
