Taro Shinoda

Momonoura

Born in Tokyo in 1964. He started to work as an artist after having studied landscape architecture. He has been continuously creating works that question the relationship between humans and nature by means of sculpture, video, installation, painting, etc. and has been recognized highly around the world. He has participated in many international art exhibitions including Art Sightama 2020, Biennale of Sydney 2016, Sharjah Biennial 12, 2015, Istanbul Biennial 2007 and Busan Biennale 2006.

Continuing to question the relationship between human beings and nature, Taro Shinoda has created many large-scale installation works. In presenting his work in Ishinomaki this time, Shinoda asked himself: What does reconstruction mean to whom? In an attempt to grasp this big question that encompasses conflict, confusion, and dilemmas literally from a bird’s-eye view, he envisioned clouds. Through this work, Shinoda hopes that people will float in the sky, become nothing while letting their thoughts wander. The title is taken from Arthur C. Clarke’s 1952 science fiction novel about the next stage of humankind.
